The lava field of Sullivan Bay features fascinating geological formations, including hornitos created when trapped gas or water exploded beneath the surface. Patterns left by ancient trees are still visible in the solidified lava. Despite the harsh conditions, the low-growing mollugo and lava cactus have taken root. Along the rocky shore, black and white oystercatchers can be spotted fishing for crabs and mollusks in the tide pools.
